Magnum Energy, a leading manufacturer of inverter/chargers for mobile and renewable energy applications, builds some of the industry's most reliable, efficient, and cost effective inverter/chargers on the market today. Specifically, the MS4448PAE 4000 Watt, 48 Volt inverter is our favorite for any off-grid system. Why? With a descent price, excellent and reliable design, and ease of use, it’s simply a great choice for an off-grid system. PriceThe retail price of the MS4448PAE will run around 2,100.00. While this isn’t cheap, we feel this is the best bang for your buck for a reliable, 4000 Watt, 48 Volt quality inverter/charger. It will be, after all, the heart of your system. DesignFirst, let's get design specifics out of the way. Here’s a list of a few technical specs:
Download the Spec Sheet for more features Now that we have that out of the way, let’s talk about why these design items are important. There are two types of inverters, Modified Sine Wave and Pure Sine Wave. The 2 diagrams below show the difference between the two. A modified, or square, sine wave rises in steps, whereas a pure sign sign wave rises and falls smoothly. This means a pure sign wave inverter will run more smoothly, with less hiccups than a modified sine wave inverter. We feel a 48 Volt, 4000 Watt inverter/charger is the perfect size for a smaller off-grid house or cabin. Coupled with up to 4000 watts of solar, it can efficiently charge a 48 Volt battery bank, giving you an adequate amount of storage capacity.. A fair amount of quality inverter/chargers in this class provide just 120 volts, making it necessary to purchase and install two to get the 240 Volts needed for items such as water pumps and water heaters. The MS4448PAE is one of the few inverter/chargers of this capacity that provides both 120 and 240 Volts. This helps with the overall price of the system, and easier installation and wiring. When designing our own system for our homestead, we needed a reliable 240 Volt inverter capable of running our deep well submersible pump. For example, we are able to supply water to our homestead from a well depth of over 100 meters. With a MS4448PAE we only needed to purchase one unit. If you find out you’re not producing the power you need, no worries. The MS4448PAE is versatile. You can expand your system by paralleling up to 4 inverters for up to 17.6 kW of power at 120/240 volts. In addition to the inverter, you will also need to purchase an MP Panel, router and extension kit to complete installation of an additional inverter. ReliabilityOur first Magnum MS4448 install was back in 2009 for a hybrid (wind and solar) system. Since then, we’ve installed numerous identical hybrid systems, off-grid PV systems, deployable/mobile systems, and expanded systems stacking 4448PAEs. We’ve never had a known instance of inverter failure. That’s reliability! We’ll take reliability over bells and whistles any day. One of Magnum’s top distributors, Invertech (http://www.invertechhaiti.com/), is located in Port au Prince, Haiti. We installed a PV system on an NGO mission building in Port au Prince and we got to meet the good folks at Invertech. We were impressed with their operation that included being an authorized service center for Magnum. We found that Magnum is king in Haiti, with a huge concentration of all types of Magnum inverters. Most people we had a chance to talk with said Magnum inverters in general are strong, rock solid pieces of equipment. We couldn’t agree more. Easy to Install and UseWe feel the 4448PAE is fairly easy to install. The inverter weighs 55 lbs., so not terribly heavy. It has been our experience that installing this inverter/charger is a 2 person job, but having the Magnum Back Plate makes it a 1 person job. There is a large access cover which makes the connection terminals easily accessible for those like us with large clumsy fingers. Coupled with the ME-ARC, a must have accessory, you’re able to know basic readings such as battery voltage, change charging parameters, adjust Low Battery Disconnect (LBD), and input your battery size to name a few of the features that help you “know your system” and be able to adjust your energy habits to get the most life out of your battery set. This saves money and keeps the lights on at critical times. Check out our video on Programming Your Favs in the ME-ARC I’m sure we’re not the only ones who get a charge out of Magnum inverters. So, what are your thoughts on the Magnum MS4448PAE? Comment below…we’d love to hear about successful installations, or any issues you’ve come across.
